Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Eastern North Carolina and South Carolina Counties

The National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm watches for several counties in Eastern North Carolina and South Carolina on Friday, May 10. The watches are in effect until 9 p.m., with forecasters tracking the possibility of severe storms throughout the afternoon and evening.

Fifteen Counties in Eastern North Carolina Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 15 counties in Eastern North Carolina, including Beaufort, Dare, Hyde, Martin, Pitt, Carteret, Duplin, Jones, Onslow, Tyrrell, Craven, Greene, Lenior, Pamlico, and Washington. According to the National Weather Service, a watch is issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area, and people should be prepared to act if a warning is issued.

A cold front is expected to drop into eastern Carolina later Friday afternoon or early evening, possibly producing gusty damaging winds, hail, downpours, and an isolated tornado risk. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the southern half of the viewing area in a level 2 out of 5, or slight risk, for strong to severe thunderstorms, while the northern half is at a marginal risk.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch and Warning Issued for Central North Carolina Counties

The National Weather Service has also issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 10 central North Carolina counties, with threats of hail, wind damage, and 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts expected during the watch. The affected areas include Aberdeen, Angier, Buies Creek, Carthage, Clayton, Clinton, Dunn, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, Hope Mills, Sanford, Southern Pines, and Wilson.

In addition to the watch, the National Weather Service has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for some counties in central North Carolina on Friday afternoon, including central Sampson County, central Cumberland County, southwestern Edgecombe County, and southeastern Wilson County. Earlier in the afternoon, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for east Moore County, northwestern Cumberland County, and northeastern Hoke County, but has since expired.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties in South Carolina

Forecasters are also tracking the possibility of severe storms in Georgetown and Williamsburg counties in South Carolina on Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for these two counties, also effective until 9 p.m.

Storm Team 2 has reported that while the day has been mostly cloudy, a few showers and thunderstorms should not be ruled out on Friday. Areas within the News 2 viewing area could see a few scattered thunderstorms through the evening before clearing overnight, with a slight risk of a storm or two becoming severe, potentially causing wind damage and large hail.
