A large tornado was captured on camera Sunday evening west of Custer City, Oklahoma, leading to a tornado emergency being declared for the area. Tornado warnings have been issued for storms moving across western Oklahoma, with a particularly dangerous situation severe thunderstorm watch in effect for parts of the state.
Tornado Emergency Issued for Custer City
At 7:41 p.m., a tornado emergency was issued for Custer City after a large tornado was spotted on the ground. Residents in the area were urged to take immediate tornado precautions. By 7:54 p.m., the tornado emergency for the Custer City area was canceled, but the tornado warning remained in effect until 8:30 p.m.
Meteorologist Michael Armstrong captured the moments the large tornado touched down near Custer City at around 8 p.m. Custer City police reported tornado damage in the area, but the extent of the damage has not been confirmed.
Multiple Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued
Throughout the evening, multiple tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for various counties in western Oklahoma, including Blaine, Caddo, Custer, Roger Mills, and Washita. The storms brought the threat of large hail, with some areas experiencing hail as large as baseballs, and wind gusts up to 70 mph.
Earlier in the day, at 2:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for several Oklahoma counties until 10 p.m. The watch, classified as a “Particularly Dangerous Situation,” indicated the potential for very strong winds with gusts up to 90 mph and large hail.
