Engage Abilities
Engage Abilities is a leading community services organisation and Registered Service Provider of the NDIS, thereby allowing you peace of mind when receiving our services.
A recent survey among 2,500 individuals with disability uncovered crucial insights into the state of disability support services. The data highlights significant gaps that need to be addressed to serve this community better.
Key Findings
Access to Support Services
- 70% of respondents reported difficulty accessing necessary disability support services. This signals major barriers preventing individuals from getting the assistance they require.
- 30% indicated they can access services with ease. While positive for some, this shows the majority face challenges.
Accessing Assistive Technology
- 80% encountered barriers when accessing daily living aids like wheelchairs, screen readers, or hearing devices. Affordability and availability were cited as the primary obstacles.
- 20% did not face technology access issues. However, the much larger majority struggling points to systemic problems.
Social Isolation
- 75% said they felt socially isolated because of their disability, implying a shortage of accessible spaces and activities for social engagement.
- Just 25% do not feel isolated, but the disconnect the majority experiences is concerning.
Community Awareness
- 85% believe their local communities have inadequate general understanding about disability rights and needs.
- Only 15% think their communities are well-informed, showing an overall lack of public awareness.
At Engage Abilities, we're dedicated to bridging this gap. By understanding and responding to the real challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, we strive to create a more inclusive and supportive community. Our commitment is not just to offer services, but to empower and uplift every individual we serve.

Accessibility Requirements
The findings show that accessibility issues are prevalent across disability services, technology access, social settings, and community awareness. For example, the 80% reporting difficulties obtaining assistive devices likely face physical barriers entering shops or offices providing that equipment. Venues hosting social activities may not have ramps, automatic doors, or elevators. Outreach programs raising awareness rarely accommodate screen readers or sign language interpreters. Comprehensive accessibility standards and mandates are essential to enabling those with disabilities to navigate their communities and access critical support resources.
Call to Action
The data gives a comprehensive look at the current landscape of disability support services from the perspective of those directly affected. There are evident gaps in access, technology, social inclusion and community awareness that require urgent attention from policy makers. More funding and better infrastructure are needed to provide comprehensive assistance that empowers those with disabilities. This report should galvanize action across public, private and non-profit channels to enact solutions to these systemic shortcomings. Engage Abilities remains committed to advocating for and serving the disability community.
